Windows XP has had hundreds of patches since it was released in 2002. Many are critical updates that patch security holes. The key to not being a victim is keeping your software up-to-date. Is it inconvenient? yes. Is it worth it to not have your ID stolen by Russian mobsters? Yes. Remember to patch your computer applications like MS Office too. Keep you anti-virus and spyware software updated. If your anti-virus software does not check for spyware, then you need spyware software too. That is the only real defense you have against this stuff. Of course keep your firewall turned on and add a second firewall if you wish. Properly configure your wireless network to keep intruders out. In step 4, the virus installs a backdoor to your system then hides it with a rootkit. There is no reliable way to find that rootkit, or to know if one lives on your computer. If you were ever the victim of a virus, then you might assume that you have a rootkit. If this describes your situation:

Rebuild your computer with a fresh installation of Windows XP. All the patches and updates from the start.
